FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Preserve Educational Choice Disappointed by Judge's Decisions Regarding Art Injunction Lynchburg, VA, November 13, 2007 - Preserve Educational Choice (PEC) expressed its extreme disappointment that the Circuit Court of Lynchburg today granted Randolph College's motion to set November 15 as the deadline for plaintiffs to post a $10 million bond or face losing their hard-won injunction and denied the plaintiffs' motion asking the Court to lower the bond amount. Preserve Educational Choice is the non-profit organization assisting the plaintiffs with their efforts to save artwork from the Maier Museum. "Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the plaintiffs will be able to raise such a large sum of money in such a short time period," said Anne Yastremski, Executive Director of PEC. "Given that the plaintiffs are serving not as individuals, but as 'representatives' of the Lynchburg community and others who cherish the Maier's art collection as a public resource, the amount of the bond is extraordinary and excessive, and paying it is simply unrealistic." Anthony Troy, a former Virginia Attorney General who is representing the plaintiffs, said: "Today's decision may lift the injunction on Thursday, but it does not lift the cloud hanging over these four paintings and the College. And, today's decision is by no means the last word on the injunction - the matter is being taken immediately to the Supreme Court of Virginia. Injunction or no, if we prevail on the merits of the case next year - and it is shown that the College holds the art for the benefit of the citizens of Lynchburg and students - then further litigation focusing on the return of the art will commence with those that purchase these paintings." In the meantime, Preserve Educational Choice calls on Christie's auction house to "do the ethical thing and refuse to sell the four paintings" until - at the very least - all of the legal actions against Randolph College are resolved. ###Preserve Educational Choice, Inc. is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization founded in September 2006 to oppose the R-MWC Board of Trustees' move to make the college coeducational and adopt "global honors" as a curricular focus. Supporters include more than 1,000 R-MWC alumnae, students, parents, faculty, staff, and former trustees united by a concern for the college's future.
